I have just been watching two adult Blue Jays building a nest in a Fir tree through a window into a sheltered area
of our home about 10 feet away.
I have not seen this activity before.
One bird is swinging on very thin twigs of an adjoining Lilac tree and with it's beak breaking off suitable branches which it then flies up into the Fir tree with and, the second Jay is busily arranging them and weaving the nest.
It is wonderful to see.
I have seen the Jays and their nests many times in the past on this property as well as the young Jay chicks being taught by the parent birds but, never the actual building of a nest by them.
Today here, wet dull cloudy with rain about 40*f ahead of a forecast two day freezing rain and ice event.
Difficult conditions for migratory species.
