Flying quickly. I have been observing, identifying, and collecting insects over 50 years. I am also the Vice President of the Butterfly Society of Virginia. So I am 100 % sure it was a monarch. By the time I got my phone out of my pocket it had flown over my fence, so no photo evidence. But just today Dr. Art Evans, the entomologist (VCU) and author posted on his Facebook page that a monarch found his milkweed and laid eggs on them, he is In Richmond, Virginia—about 120 miles northwest of me.
