Barn Swallow (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/18/2018

Number: 1

Submitted by Don Davis:

This sighting is reliable but also surprising after the recent ice storm which left the grounds here covered with a hard layer of ice, and temperatures this day not far above freezing.

Luc Fazio reported that while conducting a bird hike, he and the group saw 2 barn swallows at Ben Machree Park in Mississauga – a city immediately west of the city of Toronto, Ontario, and 2 more barn swallows not far away at Rhododendron Park. They were feeding well on the water and at the shoreline where they will nest, as they have done in the past. There were some flying insects by the shoreline, they were feeding on some “midges” that havd hatched and were flying around close to the shorelines and on top of roofs of houses very close to the lake.
