Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 04/23/2018

Number: 2

Today while fixing dinner a hummer came to my feeder. It chased a chickadee that was on the shepherd's hook away. It ate for a good while then flew off. It had its back to me so I couldn't determine whether it was male or female. In a very few minutes it was back and on the shepherd hook (on guard) It was obviously watching for another hummer. Shortly another appeared and the chase was on. It was back and forth on the feeder for 2 hours. Guarding. That is very unusual for us to have first ones coming through to stay around like this. I put my feeders up on April 13 and have been watching pretty closely. This little one acted very much like the ones we had last summer in their way of guarding the feeders. So happy they are back.
