Sightings report image

Date: 04/20/2018

Number: 2

This was a chilly day in the 50's and low 60's, so did not see many monarchs. At 4:30pm it was 60 degrees F, partly cloudy, with a very light breeze, and 53% humidity. I saw 2 male monarchs near each other. One was fairly bright-winged and was sitting on a flowering milkweed ~ resting and getting a bit of sun now and then as the clouds briefly parted. The other fellow was nectaring intensely from lavender Self-heal flowers (Prunella vulgaris) ~ a good nectar source for monarchs and one of their favorites. This is a photo of the chilly monarch as he rested on a flowering milkweed ~ trying to catch a bit of sun.
