This was a cloudy, overcast day with rain to start in the afternoon and continue with thunderstorms through the night. From about 1:00 to 2:30pm I observed 5 individual monarchs (3 faded males, 1 bright-winged male, and 1 faded female). It was 71 degrees F, cloudy, breezy, with 79% humidity. The female monarch was fluttering low, going back and forth through a fenceline abundant with wild blackberry vines (now with ripening red berries). The male monarchs were flying and nectaring ~ mostly on Self-heal flowers and Prairie plantains. This is a photo of one of the males as he takes some sips from the tiny flowers of the tall Prairie plantain (Cacalia plantaginea).
