Sightings report image

Date: 04/23/2018

Number: 10

The day started with a lovely cool morning, sun-bright and dewy. At 10:30am it as 62 degrees F, lightly breezy, with 60% humidity. I saw a couple of monarchs at that time resting and sun-bathing.

As the day warmed up it also became windier and drier. By 2:30pm it was 75 degrees F, NW winds at 7mph, with humidity at 43%. Now I was seeing more monarchs flying and sailing around ~ finding nectar from Prairie plantains, Self-heal flowers, and (easy for me to see) the potted Butterfly bush in our front yard.

I did not see any females egg-laying, though I still have been finding many eggs on the milkweed plants.

This is a photo of a fresh-winged male monarch (rare for me to see) ~ he was nectaring at times from the Butterfly bush and defending it against all comers, including a very determined Question Mark butterfly. Here he is resting/sunning, ready to spring up instantly if any interlopers wander into his territory.
