Nature can be very harsh sometimes, but when you look at the whole food chain and the idea that survival of a species is often dependent on a member of another species dying, it's all part of the big picture of the connections in life, which includes death.
A village about 60 miles south of us, Holy Cross on the Yukon River has said they've been seeing Bald Eagles since the second week in March. We're still waiting.
Our local Bison had come for a visit on our village road and died there. The snow was too deep in our area and the Wood Bison were starving. It's been a hard winter for them. The men went to check on the bison and they said that a Bald Eagle was busy pulling the soft furry hair off of the dead bison, Ravens sitting in the trees nearby, were waiting for the Eagle with it's sharp, hooked beak used for tearing to open up the carcass of the bison so they could feast.
The men from our village put an end to their plan, though and had to skin and gut the bison and salvage the meat.
We think that the Ravens must have told the Eagles to come and help. Ravens don't have beaks for tearing. The cycle of life and death goes on.
