Sightings report image

Date: 04/24/2018

Number: 9

Throughout this day I saw monarchs flying around and nectaring. At 11:30am it was sunny, 76 degrees F, 48% humidity, with a light breeze. As my son and I walked near the house, there were monarchs floating near ~ curiously checking us out at times. Many lovely encounters! They were nectaring on the lavender self-heal flowers abundant in that area and on the potted butterfly bush. At that time I saw 5 individual monarchs, four faded-winged, while one seemed bright-winged at a distance.

By 3:30pm it was sunny, 82 degrees F, 41% humidity, with a light breeze. I saw multiple monarchs then and in the later afternoon ~ I think all of them males. They were sailing about, having aerial disputes, and nectaring. The favorite nectar plants were prairie plantains, milkweed blossoms, and self-heal flowers.

This is a photo of one of the beautiful morning monarchs as he nectars from a self-heal flower (Prunella vulgaris).
