Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 06/02/2014

Number: 1

a) In 2014, at this location, I sighted only ONE adult monarch in June. I was working outdoors; my work area being approx 1/4 mile from a small, natural milkweed source on the property.
b) From approx. May 19/2017 thru June 19/2017, I sighted 8-10 adult monarchs, also from the exact same work area. Each butterfly was flying in the direction of the milkweed source.
c) My workplace is Manheim NY Auto Auctions and I am an outdoor vehicle photographer; working outside all day.
d) Manheim property is privately owned and originally it was a massive swamp entirely. Manheim is bordered to the South by Route 17 and to the North by I-84; also being directly across Route 17 from Stewart Int'l Airport; recently designated as a SuperFund site.
e) At present, approx. 55-65% of the property is paved for business use. The remaining, undeveloped, open areas are in their natural state and contain numerous deciduous and evergreen trees, marshland, streams, wildflowers, ponds, grasses. The soil types vary from dry/clay-like to wet/Marsh, sandy, loamy and dense forestland. Wildlife is abundant and observed by many employees who work outdoors all day; box turtles, Canadian Geese, wild cats, deer, snakes, butterflies, ducks, turkeys, groundhogs, skunk, and once, a black bear was sighted. f) Of particular interest, is an undeveloped open space area, approx. 2 acres, where milkweed is attempting to dominate. This area receives a minimum of six hours of direct sun, with approx. 50% of it protected by a "sensurround of trees. I believe the Monarchs are searching for this food. My intention is to exploit this area by propagating the seeds, with the intention of establishing a dense "Milkweed Prairie", in order to attract the largest Monarch migration possible.
Presently, I am measuring this open space, taking soil samples, taking photographs, and drawing up a formal plan to submit to my assistant manager for review.
