Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 05/02/2018

Number: 1

First hummingbird of the year! Since hanging feeders for 5+ years and tracking sightings, this is the earliest I've sighted a hummingbird. And is about a week earlier than the usual May 8th arrival.

I didn't hang my feeders as early this year as we had an ice storm plus snowstorm mid-april (and even a heavy frost april 30th!) But they have been up since April 23rd. The juice was fresh late yesterday, so should be ok, despite the +27°C weather today!

I have two feeders hung at the moment (3 more will go up soon) and he first visited the one in the front yard, but soon after he also found the one in the backyard. Seems familiar with the area, so I hope he's one of the 2 males that stayed in our yard for all of last season. We keep increasing our resident population, slowly but surely.

My beautiful green humble-bees, welcome home!
