Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)
Sightings report image

Date: 05/02/2018

Number: 3

First hummers of the 2018 season arrived tonight, between 6:10 PM and 8:30 PM tonight. Due to the cold Michigan weather, recent snow and late spring there is very little natural nectar. The past two days have been 80 to 70 degrees with winds from the SW between 25-30mph, so our small jeweled friends had quite a tail wind. On Sunday, April 29th I put out red tomato flags, recycled Christmas wreath bows and updated perches with 4 feeders, expecting the little kiddos to arrive on their usual May 6th to the 8th dates--the dates they've usually arrived for the past 25 years. May 2nd is the earliest arrival date we've seen. We're thrilled to welcome them, be it as migrators headed further north, or as our summer resident / guests. Picture shows recycled Christmas wreath bows and red tomato bag flags used to "woo" small hummer friends to our habitat; it's been said hummers can see the color red from one mile away. Hooray .
