Ice out record: Same date but two hours, 25 minutes later
Official Ice-out Lady Jan Holtz made the announcement Friday at Benny's Barber Shop downtown.
“I don't think there's a more appropriate place,” she said. Holtz declared ice out on May 4 at 11:53 a.m. The date tied the record, set in 1950. It did come almost 2.5 hours later, however. According to 1950 records, ice out was declared at 8:28 a.m. on May 4.
“The wind was up to 20 mph with temps in the 70s on Friday. I knew it would be today,” said Holtz, who called from Kay Beach in Birchwood. With binoculars in hand, she searched the lake for signs of ice in the bay but found no trace.
Also worth noting, ice-out dates have been kept since 1928, so this year marks 90 years worth of recordkeeping.
