At 10:30 am I did not see any monarchs on a brief excursion collecting milkweed leaves ~ needed as I have now brought in some eggs and caterpillars to raise indoors. It was 71 degrees F, partly cloudy, with a light breeze, and 68% humidity with heavy dew on the grass.
I had to leave in the afternoon, but around 1 to 1:30pm I saw 3 male monarchs ~ two were faded-winged and one a fresh-winged newborn. It was now 76 degrees F, cloudy, quite breezy, and with 51% humidity. This is a photo of the bright-winged newborn who nectared for a long time on our butterfly bush, going from bloom to bloom. He also chased a black swallowtail butterfly away ~ but then needed to rest in the leaves of a tree for a while after that bit of excitement. A joy to see him!
