Detroit Lake in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota

"May 1 is officially known as May Day, but Detroit Lakes residents had another reason to celebrate on that date this year: It was the day that both Big and Little Detroit were officially declared ice free.

"The last remnants of ice on Big Detroit vanished during the half-inch early morning rain (on Tuesday)," says longtime local resident Dick Hecock, who has been the official keeper of local "ice in" and "ice out" data for the Pelican River Watershed District for more than 30 years now.

"This is 11 days later than the long-term average, but almost two weeks later than the average of the last 25 years, which has included two of the four March ice-outs (in the 126 years for which records are available). The latest recorded ice-out was May 17, 1950, Hecock says. Though records compiled by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources show a later date, on May 19, 1908, "our local data shows that April 19 was that year's ice-out," he added. "May ice-outs are fairly common, occurring about once every eight years," he said. "But there have been three in just the past 10 years, including this one."
