For the past two days I have not seen any monarchs, though I was away from home more than normal as well. Today around 6:30pm I saw 2 male monarchs flying and nectaring ~ one was very faded-winged while the other was newborn-like and bright-winged. It was 80 degrees F, partly cloudy, with light winds, and 63% humidity. The older monarch was nectaring on prairie plantains, while the newborn seem to like a plant with tiny flowers (a mystery plant to me). Both monarchs flew near each other nectaring on their personally-preferred plants without any scuffling ~ seeming to be content to nectar and at times fly over the milkweed patches. This is a photo of the newborn monarch nectaring in the early evening on the mystery wildflower.
