Around 2pm I went out to collect more milkweed leaves for the ever-hungry monarch caterpillars that I have started to raise indoors. It was 78 degrees F, cloudy, quite still, with 80% humidity. I saw 2 male monarchs with one being faded-winged and other bright-winged. They seemed to be the same duo I had observed yesterday, as the older one liked nectaring on the tall prairie plantains and the younger one liked the tiny wildflowers. They both nectared a lot, flew low over the milkweed plants, and at times rested. At 3pm a storm front came through bringing wind, rain, and cooler temperatures (dropping 10 degrees quickly). This is a photo of the newborn nectaring again from his favorite mystery flowers.
