Monarch Larva Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 06/02/2018

Number: 2

Daven and I went out into DJ's yard this morning to conduct MLMP (Monarch Larva Monitoring Project). Daven can earn volunteer hours toward high school graduation by doing this, so it's good incentive for him. We checked all the common milkweed in DJ's yard. On 66 plants, we found a total of 7 eggs and 2 larvae. The 2nd instar larva I found yesterday was molting today, and Daven got a cool picture of it. If you look closely, you can see its head capsule popped off next to it, and the rest of its cuticle (skin) crumpled up behind it like it just crawled out of a sleeping bag.
