Monarch Larva Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 06/02/2018

Number: 9

We checked some other monarch hotspots around South Bass island. We visited the lighthouse grounds, but the flies were so bad we found it hard to examine the small amount of milkweed left (post phytoplasma infection) without them flying in our faces.  We went over to Put in Bay winery and checked about 2 dozen milkweed stems along the walkway to the front door, but found nothing--not even evidence of chewing.

We decided to go watch the sunset from the ice ramp, a ramp that the ice fisherman launch their shanties from in winter. And we scored big! On just 26 plants, we found 9 larvae. One 4th instar, the rest ranging from 1st through third instar. The couple that lives immediately next to the ramp were also enjoying the sunset, and were excited to hear there were monarchs present. They enjoy raising them.
If you look in the center of the milkweed patch, near the top of the plant, you can actually see the 4th instar in the sunset photo. I also got a macro shot of that larva. And photos of the other larvae as well.
