I covered my usual route through the N.C. State U. farm fields south of Raleigh this afternoon (June 7), spending most time at the extensive plantings of Common Milkweed and Butterfly-weed at the Agri-Ecology garden. The flowers were covered in Variegated Fritillaries, in some cases 20-25 on a stand of the orange-flowered Butterfly-weed! Here are my totals:
