Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 06/08/2018

Number: 36

We are into the second generation of monarchs in our garden. The first ones gave us 33 monarch that flew off. we eight chrysalis that failled to emerge. One that emerged with died a later in the day after emerging. Two that fell to their death after attempting to attach their silk. The 3rd gen is now forming Js and chrysalis', three have already transformed to butterflies. We have thirteen formed chrysalis so far, four forming J, and another nine ready to start their migration to find a place to hang. A good chance we will have over 50 monarchs so far this year when this group is complete. On the first gen we had so many caterpillars we had to buy four additional milkweeds because they stripped the existing six milkweeds bare and had to buy four more to make sure they had enough food. On this generation we had ten plants and had to go an buy two more to make sure these had enough food. An amazing adventure so far. My wife and I wake up every morning checking progress and check in the evening at dusk to see what changes have occurred.
