Good day 2 work n yard since we had some cloud coverage. Husband & I w on Front Porch talking @ 2:30pm. Saw adult, male BC feeding off of Texas Firecracker(orange colored)-Anisacanthus wrightii. Told my husband 2 look & he said I saw 1 feeding off of that several times earlier-he didn't know w sex it w. I replied "He sure does love it as he is working ea.flower going really low 2 the ground. At 2:45pm either female or Juvenile BC came 2 Front Porch & fed from 4 oz. Aspects HummmBlossom feeder. 1st heard vocals then I froze & slowly looked up. Hummer hovering then @ feeder "sizing me up" 2 C if I was a threat. Decided I wasn't & that I w far enough away 4 it's comfort zone. Went back 2 feeder & did hovering feeding-taking10-11 sips w still doing vocals, keeping an eye on me & flew away. NOTE: I think male I saw earlier @ Acanthus stays a lot N Front yard. Flowering Plants there--(3 Lipstick, 3 Hot Lips, 5-6 Cherry Chief, 3 Orange Anisacanthus, 2 Mango Popsicle, 2 new Agastache x 'Ava', 1 Salvia 'John Whittlesey', 1 6ft. tall Trumpet Vine( Campsis Radicans 'Indian Summer' is @ Peak Bloom time, Alebia (white) is beginning 2 bloom, 1 Large white Pine tree 4 either nesting/Perching & 1 mature Bradford Pear tree is a favorite perching/ Preening site after bathing n sprinkler System. W b interesting 2 C if hummers come 2 backyard 2 camp out during fuel-up time 4 migration w backyard plants w b n peak bloom w include-red Huge Turk's Cap, Pink Turk's Cap, 4 David Verity (Cigar plants), Amistad w b very huge by then,Cypress Vine,'Midnight' Mexican Bush Sage, 2 mature Heatwaves w b n their Peak re-blooming once again after it gets cooler. Salvia Heatwave's blooms R slacking off a bit now but still blooming, our new Jacob Cline Monarda w b really blooming as husband 4got 2 H2O it w I w bed bound. It w in full afternoon sun n small pot from Local Nursery,(I thought it w dead) but instead of tossing decided 2 put N shade 4 a few days watered it 3 x a day, had 2 go back & trim the leggy part. Putting back out from base now & we give it a lot of H2O 3 x a day, replanting it N2 larger container. Last fall hummers really fought over & guarded the red 7 ft. tall x 5 ft. wide Turk's cap(it w given 2 us as owner's said it w 2 big 4 their yard. It m well b "Big Momma". Hummers perched on a Bamboo pole used 2 stake Mexican Sunflower's. It w a good tall "Look-out post" 2 chase away any intruder's trying 2 feed off of Turk's Cap. Closer 2 leaving date the fiercer chasing was. I w enjoying all of the excitement, while my husband w trying 2 chase them w camera 2 C where they were. They had camped out way out near fence line @ Turk's Cap gorging themselves for 3 days & then they left. This yr.(2018) since Oct. 2012 when we set out our 1st feeder we have not had any Rubies. Every yr. since 2012 we have had both BC's & Rubies. May get some this Fall during Migration. Some traveler's w rest here 4 a few days b4 moving on. Other's like the adult, male Broad-tailed decided being chased by adult male Rubies & Juvenile males w 2 much 4 him as I watched 5 hummers go after this new visitor. By the time I went Nside 2 get my camera he decided 2 leave. Hope I get 2 C a Rufous, Broad-tailed or even a Broad-billed Hummer this Fall as that is a rare treat 4 us.
