I was up at Illinois Beach State Park in Zion, Lake County, IL, giving a naturalist’s tour today, and we spotted what appeared to be at least a dozen monarchs of both genders during our 90 minute hike. There may well have been more. I did not see any caterpillars and we didn’t have time to check for eggs but there was clear patrolling behavior.
We saw four different milkweeds - common, small green, butterfly, and a few whorled MW.
