Monarch Adult Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 07/14/2018

Number: 1

Two weeks ago (on June 30th), a Monarch butterfly release was done at the Centre Crest nursing facility (where my Mother resides) in Bellefonte, PA.   Today (July 14th), while visiting my Mother, we spent some time in the residents’ garden (which is where the release had taken place).   We saw one male Monarch butterfly fluttering about the southwest section of the garden, where common milkweeds and coneflowers grow.   During the time we were there (1:45 - 2:30 PM), the butterfly was in flight the majority of the time.   When it did land (and we could see it), it usually did so for just a few seconds, and always on a leaf.   (It strikes me as odd that it never appeared to stop for nectar.)

I’ve included a photo here showing: :

  • two views of the section of the garden that the butterfly circled,

  • a shot of the butterfly that I was able to catch during one of its brief stops, and

  • a couple of shots (apologies for the poor quality of the photos; my phone’s camera doesn’t do close-ups very well) of two of the three Monarch caterpillars that we spotted on the leaves of some of the more easily viewed milkweeds.

At the time of this observation it was partly sunny and conditions averaged about:

  • Temperature 85°F

  • Dewpoint 67°F

  • Humidity 56%

  • Air Pressure 30.1 inches

  • Wind Speed about 4 mph

  • Wind Direction from the SW
