Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 07/14/2018

Number: 671

Information shared by Ed Poropat. Haliburton Highlands is cottage country in the Canadian Shield. About a 2 hour and 4 minute drive northeast of Toronto and just south of Algonquin Park. Rocky hills, dense forests, home to bear, deer, moose, wolves and many lakes.

"On Saturday, July 14th, we held the 18th annual Haliburton Highlands Butterfly Count. The event was attended by 18 participants. The weather was mostly cloudy, hot and humid (temperatures varied from 21C to 25C, but felt much warmer with the humidex). The day was punctuated with showers and downpours. Despite the somewhat marginal conditions, we had an excellent day.

Monarch – 671 (our 2nd best count ever….a wee bit short of 768 in 2012. Many were so fresh they could barely fly or were observed on the ground “hardening up”.)"
