Carden Alvar is an important Ontario geographic feature that also includes a new provincial park on this alvar plain (thin layer of soil over limestone). It is home to many unique and rare flora and fauna species. Nature Conservancy continually purchasing lands to add to this unique habitat.
Bob Bowles reports for his count area:
"The Carden Alvar Butterfly Count was held today and most of the six teams got rained out. However, my team experienced no rain in our area. We observed many butterflies but the most interesting was 100 Monarch, mostly females around milkweed, and on Joe-Pye Weed and Swamp Milkweed. We also observed up to 20 Monarch caterpillars feeding on common milkweed. It is a great year for Monarchs on Carden Alvar."
