For the past couple of weeks I have seen monarchs in my yard every day, laying eggs on swamp milkweed. I noticed that the eggs hatch, but only see small holes in the leaves. The young caterpillars did not develop. I have not seen caterpillars.
Today I saw 2 small caterpillars (about 1 cm each) on swamp milkweed leaves in the early afternoon. About an hour later I saw a northern paper wasp eating one of the caterpillars, and the other caterpillar was missing. After finishing the caterpillar, the wasp climbed from leaf to leaf, methodically patrolling each (probably in search of more caterpillars).
