Hummingbird, Nectaring from Flowers

Date: 07/22/2018

Number: 2

Monarch Waystation #271 reports 2 hummingbirds nectaring in yard, seen out front window between Noon and 12:15 pm as I prepared lunch. One bird fed on Lemon Queen sunflower and Tithonia. At same time 2nd smaller bird tried ironweed, culver's root, tropical milkweed. Both saw me through window and took off. A few minutes later, a hummingbird [with tail spots, no red on throat] fed on Tithonia and tropical milkweeds only, flew off. Next look out the window, hummingbird [with no tail spots] visited Lady in Red Salvia, Ruellia, Culver's Root, Rudbeckia, flew off. Final look outside: "spotless" visited Tithonia, Salvia, Rudbeckia, yellow and orange blooms of Portulaca. Because of the differing plumages and nectaring preferences I concluded there were at least 2 birds consistently in the yard in those 15 minutes.
