Monarchs are journeying South!!
Today at Point Pelee National Park Lat 42°N,
at The TIP between 12 noon & 12:15pm I counted at least 24 Monarchs arriving on east & west sides of The Tip & in directional flight journeying south across Lake Erie!!
Pre-migration Migration? Sure. I observe this usually annually Aug 18th/19th....so...a tad early, or so many more this year they're just more noticed. I have observed directional flight south 2 other times this summer, the earliest being July 10th, but not this quantity of Monarchs.
I did also observe some Goldenrod in full bloom but the majority is in tight bud with a hint of yellow.
There was a light to moderate wind from the SW. Majority of Monarchs took to the east side, those on the west side (blue sky) had a bit more of struggle against the wind.
It was a very hot & humid 30°C with a Real Feel of 34°
A friend at The TIP around 4 pm observed same, Monarchs flitting to The Tip & continuing south across the lake.
A storm with heavy rain & strong wind came in from the west around 8:30 pm.
