Monarch Larva Sighted

Date: 08/16/2018

Number: 45

This is the second generation of monarch butterfly caterpillars we've seen on our milkweed this summer - a first for us. About 4 were lost to tree-hoppers (whom I've actually caught attacking and sucking the juice out of caterpillars), unfortunately. However, all these 45 are still active, now mostly full-size and the second one is forming it's chrysalis. I'm hopeful that they'll mature in time to fly South before frost. Daytime temperatures have been good so far (above 20 C or 70 F), but we had one overnight windchill two days ago, of only 3.9 C (39 F).
