My organic vegetable garden continues to be "infested" with milkweed!
My friend takes some when they're 10" high and puts them in her alley. They all grew just fine! She says her trick is to take them out of the garden along with some of their soil. If the garden soil falls off the roots, they won't transplant.
Milkweeds lay a deep strong runner-type root and it's easy to pull them out of the garden - but the runner root remains deep below. Only the vertical stem and root pop off easily, protecting the main runner root from loss.
Today the milkweed are producing lots of pods, getting ready for mature seeds.
I have other types of milkweeds that have orange flowers, and they aren't even flowering yet. I hope the fact that they're different will attract nectaring females on their way south. Females will drink different nectars that contain chemicals to help them fight off certain diseases.
