I'm just picking a date because I've actually seen a monarch (either the same one or a different one each time) flying among the phlox on several days in the last couple of weeks. I usually see them on the Autumn Joy Sedum, where they actually sit and I can observe them, so I was kind of astonished to see this one/these so early before the sedum has even flowered and I never saw them actually sitting on the phlox. I think their appearance was so unusual that I didn't even think to report it! Could they somehow have known about the sedum and been stymied when they arrived to find that it hadn't flowered yet?
