Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 08/31/2018

Number: 2

The 2 year old female (Little Little) that rules my yard is still here making sure no one else uses “her” feeder. When I’m sitting outside she’s the only one that comes in close for the cardinal flowers and jewel weed growing very near my chair. One other was on the “common” feeder this morning, likely the rival female that is probably Little’s mother. 3 were buzzing the patch of zinnias and black-eyed Susans yesterday that I believe are this year’s young. But I don’t know who is the mother of whom. I see the patch of common red clover is ready to bloom again. I keep it dead-headed because I don’t want it to take over. But I’ve noticed that they love it so much that every flush of fresh blooms brings them in for aerial acrobatics. And sometimes a skirmish If Little decides she wants a taste. There has not been a resident male here in the 5 years I’ve lived here. My next door neighbor says a couple males use their feeder. They’re moving before next season. I might need to put up another shepherd’s hook and station next year to keep my girl happy. One can only hope.
