Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 08/27/2018

Number: 7

Hummer visitation to our feeders has been consistent throughout the day. During a two hour observation period from 11:30am to 1:30pm I could positively verify visits from 4 different adult female hummers, 4 different juvenile female hummers and 1 male hummer which could have been just passing through as he acted a bit skittish. There has been no visual sightings of our dominant resident male at the feeders so far today. Assumptions are he has started his migratory journey southward. Rather unusual for us to see our male hummers leave before September arrives. Temperatures have been quite warm for the month of August both on the high and low side. Today's temperatures during observation was 86 degrees, expecting to reached 88 degrees with a low temperature tonight of 73 degrees. Humidity was 73% during viewing with partly cloudy skies and winds out of the southwest between 9 to 18 mph. Those plants we have in bloom that hummers find an attraction to are red single bloom varieties of Rose-of-Sharon, two varieties of Salvia, some bee balm still blooming as well as a few annuals in hanging baskets hummers prefer.
