Monarch Larva Sighted

Date: 08/30/2018

Number: 20

On plot of about 200 milkweed, protected from lawnmowers by small picket fence, our sharp-eyed gardener Gilberto spotted upwards of 20 caterpillars in several stages of molt, plus two chrysalises. About half were 5th instar (32 bands), most of rest either 3rd or 4th. Later in day we saw a new Monarch very large and fresh color, nectaring on a hummingbird sweet. First time in five years we've had this much activity.
