I was at an air show at the Waukegan National Airport today, and saw at least 20 monarchs breezing through, individually, over the course of about 4 hours. I commented that I saw at least as many monarchs as I saw airplanes. It was the most wild monarchs I've seen in one day since the early 1970's, when I saw what was probably a peak migration.
It was hazy-to-partially sunny, but windy out, and only about 68 degrees. Not a nice day to conserve energy.
