Hummingbird, Nectaring from Flowers
Sightings report image

Date: 09/10/2018

Number: 11

63 degrees, breezy, gentle rain. Our hummingbird population is dwindling, as last Wednesday (September 5th) there were over 40 hummingbirds in the habitat. There is one male in the group. They continue to be surprisingly social-- sharing branches, trees. Attached is an image showing 2 hummers sharing a small branch perch next to a feeder. Thus far we've had six birds sharing "perching space" together on these small branches. There are large expanses of "massed" favorite flowers in addition to 20 feeders, so perhaps the large quantities of available nectar reduces territorial behaviors.
Nectaring from: Lantana, Black and Blue Salvia, Wendy's Wish Salvia, Honeysuckle, Walkers Low Catmint, Dicentria Luxuriant, Delphiniums, Phlox, Impatients, Cardinal Flowers, Turtle Heads, Zinnias, Nasturiums, 4 O'clocks, Hostas, Cuphea
