Sightings report image

Date: 09/14/2018

Number: 350

Sept 14th 2018
At The TIP Point Pelee National Park
25°c & Humid, Light Winds at 6pm NE @5kmh changed at 7 pm to E @3kmh.
Approx 350 Monarchs counted. At 6 pm numerous were flitting about West Path, arriving from the north & settling for awhile on trees along West Path.
The Pesty Midges (seen in photos) & Stable Flies were also present.
Monarch International Airport - Between 7:09 & 7:19 about 80 Monarchs appeared seemingly from out of nowhere over Lake Erie east of East Beach.......amazing to watch them zoom in straight to Tip trees. (See video)
I have observed this previously with them arriving over water from the NE, figuring they're cutting across open water from Wheatley or Rondeau, but from due East, I'm curious as to where they departed from.
Clusters formed late 7:30, in interior trees (poor lighting) & at Tip Shuttle Stop. I returned there too late to view/locate any additional clusters.
All clusters were on either bare branches or in the usual favoured Hackberry Trees.
Always a new day & new show.
