Hummingbird, Nectaring from Flowers

Date: 09/18/2018

Number: 7

Overcast, 66 degrees this morning in the forest. These birds arrrived a week ago and are migrators who decided to linger. As they arrived they looked slender, sleek, svelte--like beautiful, irrisdescent minnows with wings :) They've been gaining weight and are starting to look plump. Our temperatures are significantly higher than normal, which has the benefits of keeping our flowers blooming and fall at bay. Their primary focus is obtaining nectar from flowers. Feeders are used early in the morning when then wake up, a little during the day and then favorite feeders are chosen used in the evening from 6:30 to 8 PM. Flowers they are enjoying: Black and Bloom Salvia, Cuphea Vermillionaire, Lantana, Cardinal, Turtle Heads, Kiss Me Over The Garden Gate, Morning Glories, 4 O'clocks, Nasturiums, Dicentria, Honeysuckle, Hisbiscus, Phlox, Scarlett Runner Beans, Cosmos, Zinnias, Lillies, Catmint, Obedient Plants, Foxglove, Indian Pinks. (Deadheading extends the flower menu :)
