Monarch Larva Sighted

Date: 09/20/2018

Number: 1

A week ago my son spotted a 4th instar caterpillar resting on some lawn furniture near our Milkweed garden. We took it inside, gave it freshly sprouted leaves to eat. 4 days ago, as a fat 5th instar, our guest transformed into its chrysalis shape and is presently dangling quietly awaiting the next phase of life as a butterfly. There is a frost possibility tonight so it remains indoors. Fortunately the extended forecast is quite temperate for Bayfield this time of year so we expect that the butterfly will be able to join its contemporaries on the southern migration without freezing.
