Hummingbird, Nectaring from Flowers

Date: 09/09/2018

Number: 1

10:30 am small bird with no tail spots but streaked throat nectared on Tithonia, Lady-in-Red Salvia, and swung by to investigate Portulaca and Rudbeckia blooms before flying off. Yesterday when I dead-headed some spent Tithonia blooms I got a mini shower -- now I understand why I'd seen hummingbirds place their bills into ripening Tithonia seed heads as well as the blooms. The seed heads store rainwater in the small leaflets that curl up along the edge of the flower after the petals drop off.
