Watched a hummingbird at 2:25 pm do a circuit of visits to the Tithonia and Lady-in-Red Salvia blooms in the front yard. I noticed that it also visited the hollow Tithonia stems left over after I deadheaded spent blooms earlier in the day. Are they getting sap out of those stems? Tiny insects? Or are they just curious and explore any stem cavity? First time I noticed this. They also probed the spent blossoms I missed, which are just past the stage when petals have fallen but not at all mature and dry seed heads.
