This writer traveled to a large farm field located south of the hamlet of Grafton, Ontario. This field had been mowed a few weeks before, and large areas of purple clover were in bloom. I was very surprised to find abundant numbers of pristine, newly hatched monarchs. Some had been feeding for a time and had plump abdomens, while others were newly hatched. In a couple of hours, I tagged 104 monarchs, but there were many hundreds more in this very large field. There may have been some roosting in the evening, but I could not stay to watch for this behaviour.
