Hummingbird Sighting
Sightings report image

Date: 10/02/2018

Number: 40

Nearly 20 years viewing migrations of hummingbirds, and this is a first for us. Morning coffee on the back porch. Few hummingbirds around; maybe a dozen. A faint sound, like a mass of bees moving. Small dark spots appear high over the oaks along our north fence line, about 100 yards up. Suddenly, hummingbirds are literally dropping vertically into our feeders. Dozens of them! We estimate no less than 40 are descending like rain. No fighting. A quick stop at the feeders, then they rampage through the turk's cap. After about 15 minutes, they're gone, and they've taken many of the earlier visitors with them. Didn't I read somewhere that hummingbirds don't migrate in flocks??

We were filling 10 30-ounce feeders about once PER DAY in mid-September, but, until this morning, it has been tapering off significantly.
