Sightings report image

Date: 10/01/2018

Number: 1

It is possible that a hummer was nearby the patio feeders, out of sight in the dense evergreen hedgerow. I base this solely on what appeared to be the tell tale sound of their droning wing beats as they zip from here to there. However, it may only have been my ears playing tricks on me and my mind wishfully hoping for one last glimpse this 2018 hummingbird season of a feathered jewel. Much noise is in the air as farmers have started harvesting their fields around our locality, so yes, my ears may have confused a similar sound. For sure the last of our regular seasonal hummer residents left over a week ago and for the past week, only but an occasional southward migrating straggler has appeared briefly at our feeders. October 1st marks the first day of us not visually sighting a hummer since our first spring hummer arrived this season. Fortunately the cooler day and night temperatures during the past week are predicted to rebound back into the daytime 80's and nighttime 60's for one more week, thus helpfully assisting any further late stragglers. As always our feeders will remain hanging and kept refreshed for another two weeks after whatever is our actual last sighting be it starting now or delayed by yet one last straggler. Thank you Journey North, little hummers and all the citizen science reporters for another great hummer season! Looking forward to the 2019 hummingbird season already!
