Hummingbird Sighting
Sightings report image

Date: 10/02/2018

Number: 3

Since my last report on 09/25 the visiting hummers only stayed 2-3 days fueling up & resting. We had 3-4 feeding from ea. feeder & I had 4 out on the Front Porch & put another 2 in the back. That doesn't count the ones flying & hovering. Visiting ones w share feeder's. We tried to count them but couldn't as the constant motion. Estimated 8-12 or more. My husband also said w he w trying 2 put feeder's back out they were coming in 4 the feeder as soon as he walked out the Front door. The visiting ones were very hungry when they got here. This sounds exactly like our Rubies we had in N.C w we lived their. They w not afraid of humans like the Tx hummers seem to be. All seem 2 prefer Front porch feeder's more open space there). I have not seen the Adult, male Ruby since the sighting of 09/24. I guess he could be using another feeder but he c have also left the day the visiting ones left. Yesterday on 10/01/18 we had 5-6 hummers feeding @ 8-9am. All day 2day we had 3 hummers. The 2 Juveniles that use 2 share a feeder refuse 2 do so now & the site of the other begins the chase. They almost ended up on the ground today. Getting heavier each day. I thought they had found a roosting site 4 the night at 6pm just 2 c them @ 7:15pm fighting over the Cigar Plants (David Verity) that still have a few blooms left. This plant has been their favorite this year. It "peaked out" a few weeks ago. They will feed at feeder's from early am when still dark until around 9-11am, return 2 feeder's @ 4-5pm. Then they will usually feed from our flowers or neighbors flowers until nightfall & may get 1 more drink rt. b4 roosting .My husband said they seemed 2 enjoy our neighbor's large Vitex tree this summer. They hang out n Front yard during the day & both like 2 sit n our very tall Crepe Myrtle tree just not together. I can hear them chattering @ ea. other w out n Front yard or changing feeder's. We have seen them also feeding from Mexican Sunflowers, Mexican Sage-'Midnight', & 'Amistad' near the feeder in the back. These 2 don't seem 2 B crazy 4 our red or pink Turk's Cap' like the ones we had last year w. They have also explored the Tall Hot Pink Zinnia's. Some of our other Sages/Salvia's are slowing flower production down such as Cherry Chief, Lipstick. Radio Red's went dormant this summer as did last summer. Hot Lips just does not do well in the Summer Texas Heat. My hummers don't seem to care for 'Lipstick' except early Spring if they arrive w flowers r rare. It is the 1st plant to bloom along w Heatwave Salvia & Major Wheeler Honeysuckle Vine. They do visit our Cypress Vine. One is a young Ruby male as w he turns his head the flecks w flash red. I think they r both young males. We have another one that sneaks over the fence 2 feed from feeder n backyard but he doesn't stay. High 85, low 71. If they stay until Saturday they w probably leave if they can get a tail wind from a Storm System coming 10/06. My records show most left by 10/09/2017 except for a straggler here & there. Will report until I no longer see them. Picture is of visiting ones.
