Observed approximately 160 adult monarch butterflies roosting on vegetation along FWS entry road. Monarchs were on a mix of tree/shrub species (Walnut, Lilac, Mulberry - not identified to species) planted along an access road to the northern end of Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge.
Monarchs were spread ~80m along access road from 5'-20' off the ground on vegetation. All Monarchs were on the northern side of the vegetation - South winds were blowing all day 9/13 and they appeared to use the site as a wind break.
Immediately west and southwest of the roosting site is a diverse tallgrass prairie containing Liatris, Silphium, Helianthus, Baptisia, Asclepias, Vernonia, Symphyotrichum, etc. Observed multiple adults, eggs, and larvae from June-September while conducting surveys at this prairie site.
