Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 10/05/2018

Number: 1

Immature male that showed up yesterday evening stayed around all day. Almost all day long he fed only from annual salvias including Ember's Wish & black & blues. He also fed quite bit from firecrackers. Finally around 5:15 he figured out how to feed from our pinch-waist feeders. He couldn't quite figure out feeders with flower- petal shaped bee guards. I watched him for about 1-1/2 hours early in the morning and about same amount of time in the afternoon until quitting time. He is good at conserving energy because he would perch in the salvias between feedings. This ties our second latest fall hummingbird sighting of a few years ago. Our latest sighting ever was October 10 some years ago when a juvenile hung on for a long time. After a very long nectar session at a feeder he went to roost at 6:34 p.m.
