Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 10/09/2018

Number: 2

Thunderstorms came last night/early am. Cloudy & dark all day & rain was very heavy. High day Temp. was 76 & low was 60. It felt warmer to me. The 2 hummers seemed to decide to "Call it quits" on the fighting & separated themselves. One stayed in the Front & fed from the Porch feeders. The other one stayed in the backyard. Constant feeding seemed 2 B the only thing on their mind which signals they will be leaving soon & maybe even tomorrow. Many of our flowers were "Beaten-Down" by the heavy rains. I assumed that the "Beaten-Down" Flowers, drop in temps, & heavy rain droved the hummers to feed on the feeders more than usual. My husband & I have found that in Texas the hummers use flowers & insects to fatten themselves up for migration instead of feeders (our hummers in North Carolina used feeders a lot more). The hummer feeding at the feeder under the eave of the roof(in the backyard was still getting rained on while he sat at his usual port at the far back so he moved as close to the house as possible to get out of the rain. This never happens as they get spoked when they see any movement at the kitchen sink. I caught both of them shaking the rain off of their feathers several times 2day. They both stayed at feeders most of the day. I did see the hummer in the Front fly to the Mexican Bush Sage called 'Midnight' once when the rain eased up. They sat longer at feeders & drank longer than usual---Very long drinks over & over. I don't know how their tiny stomachs can hold all that sugar water. When I am on "Hummer surveillance" I keep the inside lights off so they cannot easily see my movements & wear black or dark navy clothing both inside & outside as they don't seem to be able to see me. I will continue to look but I have a feeling they may take off South very soon. Keeping feeders cleaned & maintained for any late migrates. I will be sad to see them go.
