A lone Monarch on my yellow marigolds. Not much activity for any winged insect this year at this time. It seems very late and chilly anyway, for a Monarch to visit my 5th floor deck in Montreal. Even the marigolds have suffered from the colder weather lately. Monarchs have always shown a like for orange and yellow marigolds and this dear one spent a good 15-20 minutes on several flowers. Unlike the bumblebees that love these same flowers in the summertime, and let me get near to photograph them, this butterfly was very skittish as I slowly approached to get a picture. So, I'm afraid it is not the clearest photo. But I do believe it is a beautiful Monarch. Unlike other years, I can't recall seeing any Monarchs up here this past summer...which is odd.
